Galata Tower, Istanbul

 Many tourists ask what to see and what to do in Istanbul during their first visits. I will focus on top activities here. If you didn’t read “One Day in Istanbul: What to See in Istanbul?”, I advice you check it out as well. If this is your first time in Istanbul, these two posts will guide you properly. There are many things to do in Istanbul but the real question is organizing the time. That’s why I write this post. I will limit the page with 4 activities. Bosphorus Cruise

Would you like to have fantastic evening in the Bosphorus? Then, you should definitely book a cruise in Istanbul. There are daily and night trips according to your preferences. I should say the Bosphorus has an amazing view during the evening especially. While youenjoy  your dinner, you’ll have a chance to see some historical structures such as Dolambahçe Palace, Galata Tower, Maiden’s Tower, Ortaköy Mosque. Main course have different options and you can choose the menu according to your preferences while you book the experience. After this experience you will have amazing photos and such a nice memory in the middle of Asian and European sides.

Turkish Bath / Hamam

It is another a must to do activity when you’re in Istanbul specially in winter time. Hamams were important places both in Roman and Ottoman Empire times. They were a prominent elements of social life. After a tiring exploring day, you can go and relax in a historical atmosphere. The city has many bath facilities from local to historical ones. However, since bath has also its rituels it is better to go somewhere that you can speak English. Çemberlitaş Hamam is one of the historical hammas in the city. The date goes back to 15th century. There is also massage service in case you need it. Moreover, if you stay in the old town area, this hamam can be in a walking distance to your hotel. 

Whirling Dervishes Show

The history of sufisim goes back 800 years. You will watch a 1 hour ceremony in a historical building. The place is located in old town as well. HodjaPasha Culture Center was a large hamam serving both men and women at past. The atmosphere is such a unique especially whe  you watch a historical ceremony. There is also Galata Mevlevi Lodge (Galata Mevlevihanesi) in case you want to get detailed information about the  sufi culture. Inside, there are nine sema areas and special collections such as marbling art, calligraphy, traditional muscial instruments.

Princes’ Islands

There are several main islands such as Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada along with other small islands. The most popular and biggest one is Büyükada. You can ride a bicycle, take photos of colorful and historical mansions, monasteries, churches. It takes almost 1,5 hours but you will catch many instagrammable photos. During the boat trip, you will see highlight structures of Istanbul. You’ll explore at the top Aya Yorgi Church, Trotsky’s house, a monastery with amazing ornamentation.
