Ankara is the largest city in Central Anatolia. We can say that where Istanbul is a kind of a cultural and touristic capital of Turkey, Ankara is an administrative capital. Besides Istanbul’s uniqueness and popularity, it is not the capital of Turkey. Yes, it is the largest city and the most popular place all around the country but the capital of Turkey is Ankara as a second biggest city after Istanbul.

What to See in Ankara?

Ankara hosts many ministries, state institutions and embassies. You can feel so official while you are walking in the center especially during the lunch break time in Çankaya district. However, there are many places to see in the city. For example, you can see historical structures in Hamamönü. All the mosques dates go back to the  Ottoman Era time. Not only mosques but also fountains, houses, mansions, shops reflects a typical Ottoman neighbourhood.

There is also “Art Street” where you can see traditional handcrafts shops. There are also several tea and coffee shops  inside the “art bazaar” . You can have a cup of Turkish coffee while you watch the traditional artists’ performances time to time. Please read “6 Places to Visit in Ankara” for more information. I recommend you to go there any season but not during the very cold weather. In Erimtan Archaeology and Arts Museum, you will witness the remnants from Roman, Urartu, Hittites civilazitons. The temple of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.
